My message icons aren't aren't showing up because their names are missing -- sometimes. This is the URL for a message icon that is not displaying:

http://www.myschnauzer.net/forums/Themes/default/images/post/.gif

It should be xx.gif.

Thanks, Peter

Hi peterinwa,

Have you changed the message icons in some way?

I might have changed them for example to display my own New icon, but this is happening with a message that's not new. AND that was in my version 1 code. I just upgraded and the code is all version 2.

The .gif xx is there, but the URL is wrong.

You can see that some of them are missing in the second column here:

They are all old topics, so I don't understand the randomness.

When I type in this link ...

http://www.myschnauzer.net/forums/Themes/default/images/post/xx.gif

The icon is displayed to me ... so it is on the server at that path.

In Admin/Smiley and Messages Icon/Edit Message Icons ... do you see the icons listed properly there?

Lou69

Have you tried Forum Maintenance>Find and Repair any Errors?

peterinwa

There were some errors, but unrelated. Fixed now.

I can't find the path to Edit Message Icons?

I see the list of Smileys just fine, but not the Message Icons.

Of course I know they are there, it's just that the name of the .gif is missing from some of the URLs.

Go to Admin/forum/Smileys and Message Icons/ then select Edit Message Icons.  I expect though that they are all there.

ETA: what mods do you have installed? Pretty URLs by chance one of them?

peterinwa

Honestly I don't see the option Edit Message Icons.

No mods installed. Brand new upgrade to version 2 today.

What do you not see ... the gif or the Edit section?  You want to make sure all your .gifs are there and they are available for all boards. Also you can FTP into your server and verify the names and case of each gif.

Did you upload with filezilla? Sometimes FZ crunches some image files.

peterinwa

My display is quite different. I don't have the column to the left, either.

OK .. that is because you are on dropdown menus and not the sidebar menu.

Lou69

Here is how it looks on a dropdown menu.

What theme are you using .. the default or core?

Lou69

Hmmm ... I just noticed you are missing the button to edit message icons. Wonder why that is?

peterinwa

Exactly. I think we'll have to wait till someone reads this that can answer that.

Again, I know however that the .gif is there okay, as some of the messages display it. The problem is the .gifs with the missing names.

I switched to the sidebar menu... like that much better!

Thanks for the conversation... got leave for awhile now.

Go to the Core theme and see if the Edit Message Icons button shows up.

Yep .. I am at a loss about what the problem is. Gonna need the better brains on this one.  :)

Not sure what you mean. I could look at it under Theme Settings, but I don't see anything there about Smileys and Message Icons.

You want Themes and Layout Settings.

Instead of SMF Default Theme - Curve, select the Core Theme.

ETA: Selecting the Core Theme will let us know if this is a theme problem. Probably not a theme issue but always good to rule out the simple stuff. If the button does not appear on the Core theme then the issue is elsewhere.

Lou69

Well ... probably not a theme issue, as far as showing the message icon. Using Firebug I can see that the markup/css is the same on the working and non working topics. When the the icon is not shown, then all the img tag shows is the .gif.  It does seem that the topics are consistant that do have and do not have the icon displayed.

Could clear the Cache and see what happens.
