Can we improve this board?
« on: August 17, 2014, 01:16:33 PM »
While public can view this board and its content, they cannot open new topic nor view the attached package of the trial / WIP mod. And without doing so, they will not be able to test it or comment about it. That will end most of the trial / WIP mods back to Coding Discussions.

I would like to ask whether we can improve this board by allowing public to have access at least to the attached package of the trial / WIP mod so that this board will be more useful / meaningful.

Just my 2 cents. ;)

There's no need for the whole community to see this board if they can't actually "interact".
My Mods

Sugested that too. Hey ho. I'd link you to the original discussion but it's not visible to most people (seekrit team board stuff that is more dangerous than wikileaks).

That seems to make some sense. I'll bring it up to the lead.

thats supposed to be, if they want to test the mod or post comment to a post the need to be subscribed to the "Community Customizer" Group wich is available from within your profile, then just wait a few days to be in it... if not PM Gary to give you access :P

read the stickys all explained there ;)

ell, the main thought behind it is this:

The stuff posted here is BETA...   people should have some knowledge and have to THINK before installing this stuff.
So, they have to join a freely request-able group.

Otherwise, some of these beta mods and themes would get installed by a brand newbie and then we get screams about how we "wrecked their forum"

Then wouldn't it make more sense to hide this board from those who are not in the group?

@ahrasis No, that will void the whole purpose of this board.  This board is for mod authors to share their ideas and code between them, it is not designed for showcasing mods and its not designed for posting WIPs. Its designed for reviewing code and offer improvements.

@Masterd No, there is nothing to hide, the whole point of this board been public was to address some of the concerns lost of mod authors had regarding the review process and what happens "behind the scenes". Regular people not been able to create new topics or download attachments is just a measure to keep this board more organized.

Sorry but I don't think that is inline with what you were saying here Suki:

Quote
How this works.

Customisation authors would be encourage to post their WIPs or completed customisations as an attach in a new topic on this board, optionally to join the request-able group. Please keep 1 topic per customisation.

Please specify in your topic subject as a prefix if this is a [WIP] or a [PENDING], this is important since if you consider your customisation as completed then it will be subjected to procedures towards approval, if it's marked as a WIP, then it will be consider as a work in progress and the customisation will not be counted towards approval until the customisation author changes the topic status to [PENDING].

Also indicate if you are submitting a [MOD] or [THEME].

And this warning is already in place for general user before they attempt to use any mods in here:

Quote
For regular users, every customisation submitted here is considered as not ready and should not be used on a live site.

Doesn't make any difference, point is, this board is not for regular users to use. That warning is just mere formality, you and I know users either don't read or don't care.
Look at them. They're just asking for it. Maybe the human race deserves to be wiped out.

I can clearly see your point. I just do not think you see mine.

By the way, this is just a mere suggestion. You can drop it if you think it is not wise to do so. Especially if you think this will create more work for the team. No problem at all.

Since I beg to differ, I will keep posting any wip or pending mod or theme in the coding discussion instead of posting them here then. That way, I can be sure that public will have access to test any of my beta mod. I will also make sure that it is properly closed and locked when the work is completed and approved.

You can keep this board clean and empty then. Cheers.

Sure, everyone can do what they want :)

I see your point, its just that this board is not for that kind of testing.  A customizer will not perform any beta testing, we just make a review on the code. We tried to port the same process we had in private for reviewing mods, the only difference now is that this board is public, the whole process for this board is very simple:

You post your mod here, it gets reviewed as if it was submitted to the modsite. Again, approval process doesn't include beta testing, your mod need to be ready, if its not ready then put the right label on it and we can help you out with whats needed.

If you want users to beta test your mods, then sure, the coding board will be the perfect place since, in your opinion, your mod is ready to use.

As for been empty, sure, thats probably because I didn't put enough effort to promote it or those who were constantly complaining about the secrecy of mods reviews aren't really interested on helping out, they just wanted something to complain about.
Look at them. They're just asking for it. Maybe the human race deserves to be wiped out.

To assume is to hope that those who came before had the presence of mind and capacity to implement the dreams of those who would come after.

You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. It seems you have chosen which, and now I must do the same.

actually, I see the intention of this board to be exactly what you think it is, ahrasis.

This board is for mod authors to make alpha and beta releases and get some people who are willing to get beta testing done...

However...   that very nature means that this should not be "general public"

(and, we MAY actually *MOVE* WIP mods from the coding board to this one for that very reason.

That was never my intention, Kindred. If thats how its gonna be from now on, I suggest you to change the "How this works" topic to reflect the new goals for this board.

I repeat, this board was never intended for beta testing.

As I said, I have no problem with this suggestion being dropped as other alternative board is in place. But you may want to make a clear point on that somewhere because I have a different thought when I joined this board / group.

You post your mod here, it gets reviewed as if it was submitted to the modsite.

This is however redundant. If you need / mean to get support from members to help testing the said mod or theme, again, it will go back to my point, of which, I am willing to drop it anyway. There is no need to prolong unfruitful debate.

You either make a rule that mod or theme submissions be made here or there. No point of maintaining them at various places. "That will only cause confusion and delay".

I already said this, multiple times, I will not gonna say it again:  This board IS NOT for beta testing.

You're taking things far too literal... when I said "it gets reviewed as if it was submitted to the modsite." it doesn't mean that the modsite will be completely replaced.

There are rules, they are clear. That topic doesn't even mention beta testing, beta testing is OUT of the equation. Period.

I'm sorry but you didn't even read the "how this works" topic, we cannot have a meaningful debate if you haven't read the procedures, no where does it says your mod is going to be maintained in 2 different places, you just made that up from nowhere.

I'm not against opening this for everyone, I'm not against allowing beta testing but the board will get flooded with request, support questions, demands, "how long does it take to be approved" topics, loose attachments everywhere. Now, if you are willing to moderate all that crap then by all means, lets do this, but if you only want this board to be more open for your own convenience, then I'm sorry but NO. We already have too many things to deal with.

If you want your suggestion to be taken into consideration then I suggest you, no pun intended, to properly give a good read at the rules and procedures before making any suggestions :) otherwise, this is, indeed,  an unfruitful debate.
