Changes don't apply to forums

Hello everyone!

I'll get straight to the point.
I am trying to change forums' width and i've also tried changing some stuff here and there but there is a problem.
Changes don't happen. They do in the preview mode (as i was working in index.css) but when i save it seems that everything that i worked on just got lost.
The script itself is getting saved when i press the "Save" button. But that's all!
Any ideeas why that occurs?

kat

Cache? Either your browser's or the forum's?

The forum one's cleared in the Forum Maintenance section of Admin,

I've cleared the Cache and i've tried a different browser aswell.
It doesnt apply changes for everyone using the forums.

some mods does require some changes to the file Settings.php ..., that file need at that time chmodded to 666 when your done with the settings you put the file back to chmod 644

how are you editing the css files?   Are you using FTP to upload a changed file? Are you using your host's file manager? Are you using the internal "edit template" function in SMF?

If you are using the internal function...  I suspect that is your problem, as the chmod file permissions are probably incorrect and won't let you save the file - so the changes never get actually applied.

Final other thought --   in addition to the local browser cache, CSS files and other template files are cached on the forum side of things as well.... clear the cache files from the cache directory

and no... herman...  no.   No mod should EVER require a change to Settings.php.

I am using the internal edit template function, any fixing to this? Should i use FTP to upload the changed file or..?

Kindred

yes...  editing files inline like that, while sometime convenient (hence the fact that it is there) should only ever be used as a last resort when you CAN'T do the edits another way.

change the file and FTP is the correct way to do it.

I highly appreciate the support!

ColdXX

I've done what you guys suggested,to use FTP account to upload the file i edited.
Guess what...that didn't change anything either.
And apparently for some users the forum width is too big and for some it didnt change a bit.

Any ideeas?

Kindred

1- confirm that the file was actually uploaded and was not rejected for permissions problems.

2- if SOME see the change and others do not, then it is a caching issue on THEIR side of things.

The thing is that their forum width doesn't change when i try to lower it,it stays like that forever...won't change at all. And yes,the file gets uploaded.

Kindred

I am not trying to be a jerk...   but how do you KNOW the file gets uploaded?   have you confirmed that the timestamp on the file or the filesize is changed?

and if they are seeing one change, but not the next change - then it is DEFINITELY a cache issue

It never applied any changes to the forum.
I've been only trying to increase its width!

Kindred

ah.   well, forum width can be complicated - especially in 1.1.x, since everything is inside tables.

what is your forum url?

indeed you do (and this is in the 2.0.x area. excuse my brief confusion. :)

So, looking at your site - I see the potential problem.

How did you change the forum width?

in the the CSS
for body, I see min-width: 750px
then, in .wrapper, I see width:850px

I suspect there may be more...   but, since you have prevented guests from even viewing, I can't tell.

Just curious... Have you tried the easy way?

Admin> Configuration>Themes and Layout>Theme Settings.

On that page, click on the theme's name and, on the new page, in the first section, you'll see "Forum width:". Have you tried changing that?

Forum looks wide enough, for me. Any wider and it'd be off the page. I can only see the info center (sic), though.

I'm using 1024x768 screen res.

How i see it. My friend sees it the same like you do.

kat

It's either your browser, then, or, perhaps, your screen resolution.

Try a different browser, first, to see if it looks OK.

I tried Opera, Opium, Firefox, PaleMoon, K-Meleon, Avant, Lunascape and IE11 (Spit!) and everything looks fine, in all those browsers...

I've cleared cookies, cache ,everything. It's the same. If i change the width now no changes will happen for you.

kat

Nope. Still looks fine, to me.

Had a radical idea, though. As that's a DzinerStudios theme, why not ask them, about this?

Kindred

here's the deal....   change the width:850px; in .wrapper in index.css to be min-width:850px;

that seems to correct all issues for me.
If you set a defined (large) width, then it may be off the screen..., but if you just use min-width, then it will expand to the screen size but will always be at least 850px

in your screen shot, it looks like you did the worst of both actions...
you added a left-margin or padding AND increased the width.

However - as k@ suggests, since that is a DZiner studios theme, they are wuite helpful to support customizations of their themes.

Changing width: 850px;to min-width: 850px;doesnt increase forum width?

Kindred

it certainly did for me, in firebug/apply mode....

if it did not do so for you, when you changed the actual index.css file, then either a) your forum CSS is cached  or b) your local CSS is cached or c) Your changes were never actually saved (and visiting your site shows that the change is **NOT** present, which implies either a or c)

Isn't that for SMF Default theme only?

that setting is for any theme which respects the setting (which is not all of them)

basically whatever you are doing is not getting saved, or whatever file you are editing is not the correct file

I guess i will just leave it like that for now.
I will get into it and maybe ask dzinerstudio support later on when my forums will get populated.

Thanks for the support! Both of you!

ColdXX

One more question.
How can i make an old mod compatible with my SMF version?
Such as: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2294

Well, paying customers definitely get support for the premium themes in the relevant board on DS' site, so if you have a problem you should definitely ask in that board - you paid for it, you deserve support, right?

Also, How can I install a mod that doesn't work in my SMF version?

That particular mod may or may not work; TwoTone was made years after that mod was made.

kat

Before you do that, though, you WILL read my sig, won't you? (Click it, for the "How?").

ColdXX

Woah,i've recently tried to change the logo from my forums. Guess what,on the preview inside the forum, where you can also edit the index.css it shows the new logo. When visit forums is the same old logo. I've edited the index.css and uploaded it via Filezilla.

I was thinking if there is a SMF feature or option that has to be ticked in order for the forum to accept modifications,i don't know, just asking!

Kindred

No, there is no such setting.

Since you continue to have problems, I would hazard a bet that your server permissions are locked down and none of the changes that you THINK you are making are actually being applied.

I've tried using a SMF theme, and i've tried using a FREE theme from Dzinerstudio aswell,i've tried many things, none appear to happen.
How can i check server settings (since i am not the one that set up my forum i really have no ideea)

Edit: Can i use cPanel to go into that?

Arantor

I'd wonder... if you saved the file, did you do a hard refresh (Ctrl-F5 in most browsers) to see if the updated version loads?

Yes i did! And it pisses me off everytime i see nothing is changed.

Kindred

That's what I mean... Is suspect that your file permissions are preventing any of the changes from actually being applied.

What is the chmod permissions for your files in the CSS directory?

Actually...   What is the specific directory that you are editing the CSS file in?

Permissions for index.css is curently 644.
Well it's public_html/Themes/Twotone/css/index.css

Oh and 1 more thing. The logo that the theme uses,i've removed it from theme directory and when i refresh the forums,it's still there.

Kindred

Try 664 and see if it lets you update it then...

Then try 666.

It may be that you don't have full CHOWN ownership of your files.
