Limiting signature images doesn't do anything?

Having 100 boards usually goes badly unless you've got a lot of content ready to go (or it's grown naturally that way)

Personally I'd be talking to CoreISP about that, he runs the servers here amongst other things, and he's got a good handle on customising configuration to make SMF run well. And for specialised tasks I sometimes get involved as well.

Almost all of the boards are tiny child boards so I don't think it will be too bad.  It's more along the theme of Main Board, one sub-board per author/company, then one child-board under that for each product, course or book that an author or company has.  Each child board talks a little about the product and offers banner links to the product (which is where the commissions come in), then members can discuss the merits of the product underneath that.  Personally, I doubt that 70% of the boards will get much traffic, but you never know.  The bulk of the posts will appear in two or three of the main boards and I don't anticipate a huge flood of members (although I certainly would welcome it!).

1and1 is cheap and, as such, you sometimes get what you pay for.  I've had them for personal domains for at least 12 years, but never for something like this.  All of the other sites I've set up for customers have used other hosting companies, but I can't say I'd recommend any that I've used before!  I may have to offload it to a better host if I continue to get issues - we'll see I guess!

The problem with having that many boards is that it actually tends to confuse people about where to post, more than it helps in most cases - and by making you look quieter than you might otherwise, it discourages people.

I know others who've had bad experiences with 1&1 :(

NW Dreamer

Hmm...  I wonder if I can reduce it down to just the authors & companies.  Maybe with just a sticky for each program/course/book/product under the author & company.  That might work.  Thanks for the tip!

Any recommendations should I go away from 1and1?

We have a whole board of threads dedicated to hosts who we have done some validation with and who subscribe to our moderately high standards. Additionally, there are reviews from actual smf users on those hosts...

Please do not PM, IM or Email me with support questions.  You will get better and faster responses in the support boards.  Thank you.

First, thanks again to Arantor!  That suggestion is going to work really well.

Second, I will go and see if I can find this board with all the hosting info.

Ok, a quick search here found some similar questions, but I'm not sure if they were exactly the same so I didn't want to pollute someone else's topic.

I have signatures turned on with the following settings for a signature image:

Maximum width of signature images (pixels) = 800
Maximum height of signature images (pixels) = 200

Users see this text under their signature box:

Images in your signature must be no greater than 800x200 pixels

However, one of the very first users went and linked to an image that was 1280x960 which was not only successfully saved in their profile, but stayed at 1280x960...

I'm not sure what I could have missed, so is this a bug (perhaps fixed in 2.1) or did I do something wrong?

Thank you,

Craig

Ok, time to revisit my opening post.  1and1 has fixed their issues and people around the world have told me they can all see the image in the link below, so I tried everything from the start and... same result.

Here's the link: http://www.nwdreamer.com/Pics/TheGorgeAndFalls/FallsTrip05.jpg

What's next?  ???

Hmmm... I just added that pic as my sig, on my test forum. The width is set as 300 and the height as 150. That pic, however, shows at full size.

I wonder what'd happen, if you tried to use it, here...

Ok, so resizing IS possible, just not in my forum?   ;D

FWIW, this behavior has been happening since I first installed SMF v2.0.8, but I have since added the following mods:

  • Child Board Removal
  • Like Posts, and
  • Remove "Last edit" mod
I'm only using the default theme (Curve) too.
Let me know if I need to add any additional details that may be helpful.

It sure isn't resizing, on mine, either. I'm on 2.0.9, which is nearly ready to go.

I really can't think of anything else, now. I'll post something in the Support Helpers board, to see if anyone gets one of those "Lightbulb" moments.

kat

You won't believe this... (I sure don't)

If you have "max width of posted pictures" and "max height" set, in Admin>Features and options>Layout, to 0 (zero), to disable it, it affects sigs, too, for some weird reason.

Arantor

I do, seeing how they curb the img tag in general, and parse_bbc handles both.

kat

Maybe their ought to be a note, in the Sigs section, to explain that? (In future releases).

Maybe make a topic for the doc team so that they can add this to the wiki (if it's not already there)? But it should also be added as a little note below that field IMHO. If possible, the functions should be splitted so that it can work properly with no weird side-effects ;) but I think this won't happen before 2.1 anyways :(

It's so powerful that on this post and even in the two PMs you sent me,you still answered my question very quickly and you're apologizing for the delay. You're the #1 support I've probably ever encountered man, so much respect for that. Thank you, and get better soon.

I'll keep this in my siggy for a while just to remind me that someone appreciated what I did while others didn't.
