How can I add a box for the user to choose when they are starting new topic?
just like the message icon.

Since the my smf is used for handing in homework, I want to add the type the the sources, e.g. news, stories, etc..

I think so, I've never actually used it, but it makes sense that way.

Why not actually use the icon instead? Make some icons for each of the things you want users to use ;)
