[GH#3102] Insert a link brings up blank page

Using "insert a link" when editing a topic does not do what I expect: I select a few words that I want to turn into a link, click the icon, paste the link into the box (leaving Description blank), hit Insert, and if the url points to the index page, all's good - but if it points to another page (something like ?topic=44.0) then I get a blank page (about:blank).

I tried pasting from the clipboard and entering manually, same result.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there another way to do this?

While we're on the links topic: how do I deactivate a link, turn it back into plain text?

Regards,

Kindred

Are toy actaully running 2.1 beta?

Your previous posts suggest that you are actually using 2.0.11
If so, there are lots of known issues with the wysiwyg editor...  That's why it was replaced in the next version...  In short... Don't use it.

Sorry for the confusion, I am having this problem in 2.1b2 (haven't noticed it in 2.0.11, which I am
also using).

Now my turn to be a little confused, though: this wysiwyg problem is known in beta2 and not to be used, right?

Kindred

no.... wsyiwyg issues in the editor for 2.0,x

never seen this issue before in 2.1
Which beta are you using? The one from this site or the newest from github?

Oh, not sure which one, but it's beta2 and I downloaded it about a month or so ago. Is there a way to check? When I'll be back at my PC I will do some more testing, sometimes it comes down to a browser issue, or caching, or mobile OS or some peculiar setting somewhere. Thanks for looking into this.

Kindred

Well, do update to the current release off of github...

I tried the same from the iMac and what I see happening is this: in the text box provided for the link insertion there is http:// already filled in and grayed (unable to remove it). I paste (or type) over it my https link, click Insert, save the page, and click on the newly created link - now it goes wherever because (as I see in the Inspect Element window) the link looks like this <a href="http://"https://myforumhere/index.php?topic=44.0"" class="bbc_link">some link</a>

This seems to happen in the process of saving the changes to my topic, as it looks fine right after editing the link but it goes bad once I hit Save.

One last thing: if, instead, I edit the link manually using the  bbcode tags, everything works just as intended.

I hope this added info helps.

I switched to a Github install but the problem persisted and I do not like the css of it, so I am switching back to the non-github version

jonesH

OK, looks like I messed things up real good, 'cause instead of launching the forum once I reverted (ftp'd) to the forum version of beta2, I am asked to go through with a full installation - and it crashes at step3 (Cannot connect to the database with the supplied data.) I am sure though the data is OK, so is there a way around the full install?

Kindred

don't do an install....  just overwrite the files.

Please note: The github version is the current and update version and is the base of what the beta3 will be....   (plus, I don't believe anything major changed in CSS or layout)

However, I see your problem now...  the wysiwyg assumes http... you want https.   That is going to have to be changed in the wysiwyg code itself, I believe...

Hm... I thought that's what I did: expanded the full zip and filezilla moved them onto my server (overwrite existing), but then when trying to launch the forum I am taken to the install page.

I will though abandon this (again) and go with the github version. Hopeing for better luck this time :)

Kindred

oh...   Well, if you used the install archive, then you would have overwritten your Settings.php

reload from GitHub and then load and run repair_settings.php to set your Settings.php to use the correct database

Ok, my forum back up and running again. Thanks all for your help.

This has been fixed in GitHub finally. The problem was that the default behavior of the editor's bbcode parser is to add quotes to any attribute value containing equal signs or spaces (for technical reasons - there are situations where spaces or = signs in an attribute could break things when not quoted), and we forgot to tell it not to do that for the url tag.
