Which SMF version are you running? Can you get us a phpinfo?
What is a phpinfo() file?

PHP not getting enough memory then which can be changed in php.ini if the OP has access to it.

actually, if the user is running a version prior to 2.0.7, that would explain the issue (and no, changing the php mem value in php.ini will likely not help)
