Hello Seniors,

i have my forum running at www.indian-femdom.com before 3 days hostgator has deleted all my webfiles. total of 40 sites lost but only this site uses smf.

i have db's left in there so i downloaded backup
i have changed my host installed db there and from script install i have installed smf 2.0 same version i was using in my forum. and later i changed settings.php with my db settings where i installed backup from my old hostgator backup.

now its showing database error. please help friends. its really my 8 years effort. cant afford to loose it. please.

Kindred

Well, from the error, it would seem that you don't have the correct database connection information in your settings.php file

well, fairly obviously, it is NOT correct -- otherwise your system would be connecting the forum without an error...

Run repair_settings and make sure that all settings are correct.
What is repair_settings.php?

If you have a backup of the database, don't worry you won't loose your content.
I would start by picking a decent host first. Was there a reason for them loosing all your sites? :o

I checked your site, you need to run repair_settings and change everyone to use default theme. You have a default theme confifured whose files are not present anymore, so your layout is messed.

thank you all for replies . margarett i tried your steps and got below errors after changing settings in repair_settings.php

Notice: Undefined index: database_error in /home/asutoshdesai/public_html/indian-femdom.com/Sources/Subs-Db-mysql.php on line 594

Fatal error: Call to undefined function allowedTo() in /home/asutoshdesai/public_html/indian-femdom.com/Sources/Subs-Db-mysql.php on line 595

which two lines are as below,

$context['error_title'] = $txt['database_error'];
   if (allowedTo('admin_forum'))

margarett

I'm not sure. Mixed files, maybe...

I can check that for you (later) if you PM me login details to your host's control panel. I need to check both files and database in order to understand what's happening...

Isn't this an option?

For these cheapies in my experience it is daylight to second place after SiteGround.

10 years ago SiteGround were great, and they keep building substantial improvements of stuff I didn't even know I wanted with every passing year. I have considered lots of alternates over the years but always gone with SiteGround. This was originally an experimental use of a cheap non-Australian based host for a social website, but that has gone so well that when the last serious website I have expires it is going over to SiteGround too.

i have exported backup in sql file before few days i lost my forum. and i dont know how to empty and drop search index sir. i am not that techy. can you please elaborate if possible ?

Kindred

You can drop the search index from the smf admin search index page...
You can empty the error log from the error log page...

But HOW did you create the backup? Did you use phpmyadmin? Your host control panel? Smf admin?

Wait a second. Quick question (not trying to hijack thread) ... is this necessary before doing backups or is this for the OP's situation?

if they are using the admin backup that can help to get a clean dump. if the dump they have is too large those tables being reduced in size will let the dump be smaller and upload possible.

i dont know whats going on here. can anybody have reply for my me ? my site is down how can i log into admin

is there anyway i can send you full backup i have ? the thing is i found another backup as well. which is 145 mb in size but when i import it to my new hosts db through phpmy admin that process never ends i have tried it for let it running for two days . and it created db with size of 450 mb . and that to process never finished i have closed windows in between after let it run for 2 day.

and i have tried installing fresh copy of smf on my domain and changed database details to my db where i stored this backup and it shows me Table 'iff.smf_bfasettings' doesn't exist this error.

That is the point we have been trying to make. What you have is not a complete backup and will never work. You need to get the actual data from your host

if i want to reduce size

another thing i want to know is i might have full db backup now. but i dont have webfiles at all. whats the procedure and steps to take while i try to restore my site on new server ?

^^^ try downloading individual tables (then rebuild complete db by restoring one by one). Needs extra time, but it may hopefully work, good luck. See attach.

Hostgator and Godaddy? Yes, they are both the same "thing".

You need to get yourself a GOOD host. Not one of those "unlimited everything". As you can see for yourself, they are beyond limited...
If you still can, cancel your Godaddy service and hire a good host. Check your "hosting" boards for good ideas ;)

And this is (also) why we don't like Pretty URLs...
I am looking at your database at hostgator right now. Your second biggest table is "members" with 176,170 records and 55,7 Mb
Your biggest table is "pretty_urls_cache" with 4,879,196 :o records and 892,7 Mb :o

If you take this database out of the equation, your database will become small and tiny and easy to move from one side to the other...

Note: in defense of Hostgator, your control panel is a terrible mess :P no offense intended but you have 23Gb just on emails from i-don't-know-when :P

I fixed your forum paths with repair_settings and your forum is now running. If you want to export your database you will have to get rid of that huge table, which will reset Pretty URLs. Anyway, remember that, because you loaded fresh files, no MODs are in place and, of course, neither is Pretty URLs.

Let me know if you need further help ;)
