In my copy of SMF 2.0.11, I have checked the option to ban IP addresses, but the only addresses I see are a huge range, such as 10.1.16.12. On edit: I only see addresses beginning in 10*.

Can we ban specific IP addresses, such as 72.238.113.49 (an example only) ? There's no way, of course, I"m going to ban a huge range. Thank you again for your patience.

If you ban "72.238.113.49" then only "72.238.113.49" will be banned.
"10.1.16.12" is also not a huge range, but a single IP.

I'm not sure what the problem is? :)

Yes, you can ban specific IP addresses or even IP address ranges. Take a look at this link for some more info- http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/SMF2.0:Ban_list

Are you trying to ban a specific member or issues with spammers?

Specific members and spammers. I'm only seeing addresses that start with 10*.... and I know they don't all start with 10. That's why I initially said address ranges.

Ok, so you are talking about the guests in members in the who's online list? Are these members that are trying to register or just browsing the forum? Have you tried doing an IP look up on any of the IP addresses? Could be  spiders and not necessarily a spammer.

Also, it is really not a good idea to ban spammers as the more bans you create the slower your forum can become. I used to ban spammers constantly when I first started my forums, and it really does slow things up quite a bit. A much better way to keep out a range of spammers would to do it by .htaccess Take a look at my own personal experience from way back when. ;) http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=509500.msg3592907#msg3592907

No, talking about registered members.

How do I do an IP address lookup ? I only have a username and an email address.

Ok, I will remember that.

I'm glad you told me that! I will relay that to my co-admin.

SMF has some built in IP look ups, ( Profile of that member » Track User » IP Address)- there you will see a list of sites you can click that will scan the IP address...but this is my personal favorite when I want to check IP addresses- http://whatismyipaddress.com/

Also, I edited my post above and added some info about htaccess. It may be a pretty good read. ;)

Also, take a look at this link about combating spam- http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Spam_-_my_forum_is_flooded_with_spam,_what_can_I_do

Adding specific to your forum verification questions when people try to register, is a really great way to combat spam.

THAT was my question, right there! Thank you. This solves my problem!

If everyone has the same IP address, then your host or you are probably using some sort of proxy service ...  And banning anyone by ip would be a bad idea.
