PM counts incorrect and Maintenance task run but ...

lately, I have had to repair a couple of members' PM counts using the maintenance tool.

but why does this happen ? and I have to always assign Admin rights to the member before repair then remove it after - is that how it's done ?

today it took about 7 attempts to get it right after changing views ... there were phantom messages, is as best as i can describe it.

what causes this and am I using the best tool and methodology ? I had to set Conversation mode before it started to behave properly and I had to select each option and run the Maint DB repair each time ... seemed a bit odd to me.

is this normal ? I have near 750 members (of which 100 visit daily) with a 40 MB db size.

no....  whatever is happening is not normal... nor is it normal to correct things the way you have been.
as a matter, of fact, in 10 years of running multiple forums, I have never had the problem you describe nor have I ever had to do what you describe as a "fix"

oh dear, that's not good.

I'm running the Enhanced PM System mod as well.

It's happened 3 times all up since I went live, well over a year ago.

I guess that I have to live with it - at least I can fix it, right ?

the rest of the forum is running well and my list of mods is near 90 now, so there may be issues stemming from that.

it was either this or deliver a totally vanilla system but I am slowly winning people over, most of which come from a vBulletin setup.

An odd situation.

You really don't need to make a user admin to recount his PMs. YOU need to be an admin to even reach the recount totals maintenance operation. Anyway please attach your ManageMaintenance.php for a quick check.

Yes, it does.

Your file does seem clean (only a minor edit). Maybe your server uses some kind of cache?

thanks, well as far as caching goes, when I issue the 'd free -h' command, I do see a cache there - is that what could be the issue ?

we are talking about a php, or mysql cache. not just any old cache.

Can you try temporarily uninstalling enhanced PM for a couple of days and seeing if this resolves the issue? If so you may need to ask the mod author to take a look.

Also I'm unsure what count you mean, if it's not the unread count it could also count things they sent?

Also it would be great to see a list of your mods just in case that's the cause.

I've just come across this thread by accident.  Interesting bug report....  I'll be looking into it....

I have about 90 mods on, including the Enhanced PM mod.

it's always the unread count that says there is mail but isn't.

my next lot of work is scheduled for Monday but the problem goes back before the EPM mod went on.

It's happened twice in about a year - is that acceptable ?

I really don't want to remove that mod but will compile a list of mods for you by then.

Well, it's good to know that EPM isn't responsible....  Sounds like you need a PM recount function!  If you go under Admin -> Forum Maintenance -> Routine, there is a box labelled Recount all forum totals and statistics.  Try running that task to see if that helps....

If that doesn't help, I don't know what to suggest....

all i'm doing now is running the db optimize every hour and scheduling the SMF optimize every 4 hours now. can't hurt, i guess.

I also had to switch between making posts 'conversational' or not and that helped reset the count, somehow, all whilst still running the reset PM counts task between alterations.

it also implies the mod, perhaps as it happened once without EPM and once with EPM.

the member tried to move some posts out to a new folder to see if that helped BUT i reversed it and ran with the default folder config.

fixed it somehow.

No you need to click "installed packages" in the package manager and copy that list ha ha .

Then we can know for sure what's installed .

You've got a mod conflict. Pick between 57 and 12, and get rid of the other one. That's probably doing it .

Post/PM Inline Attachments is designed to work with PM Attachments.....  And I don't see how Post/PM Inline Attachments would cause a PM miscount within the software....

If they're designed to work together then I guess that's not it. Perhaps 64?

I have tried 64 but only after the fact. I'm still hoping that the additional optimise and mysqlcheck are helping.
