Messaging to members of a specific membergroup

I was wondering if it's possible that members can only message to members within their assigned member group ONLY?

Example:
Project Group #1 with members 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Project Group #2 with members a, b, c, d, e
Only the 1-5 can PM between themselves and have no interaction with a-e

Would something like that be possible?

Afaik, there is no mod to do that... I don't think it's ever even been requested before

As a workaround would this be possible?
1) Totally hide the member list from all members
2) Disable the auto complete feature while typing out a member's name in the messaging
3) Show a "custom" member list for messaging within a specific member group?
