Trying to upgrade a test board to 2.1 and getting this error on running upgrade.php:

Any advice on what might be going on?

It's a known issue, so I guess you'll have to wait for a fix unfortunately https://github.com/SimpleMachines/SMF2.1/issues/3319

Just a side note, it's things like this that are the reason beta's should not be used in a production environment unless you absolutely know what you are doing

Agreed, I'm tinkering with a "clone" of my production site so there is no is production impact at all in my case.
