There are a few paid galley mods out there as well that may have more options.
Thank you, br360, but this MODs that indicated not do that, also not found a MOD with this feature.
It would be very interesting but unfortunately there is no MOD. :'(

ummmm....   I think that SMF Gallery does something close to that.

Looks more like a slider than a fully fledged gallery to me.  Perhaps search Google for image sliders.

I know this is old topic, but here is similar mod for your purpose in case you haven't got solution:
FancyBox 4 SMF
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3303

It does similar thing, but is based on attachments. So example: Upload 10 attachments and click on one. It has autoplay option for slide show, but not sure if it work properly, but you can just use cursor left/right which is the very best solution. Also fancybox resize image to fit to your page and on single click will go to full size. You can set a memory on attachments, limit on how many you want, etc. Only ugly part in this is how attachments will take a lot of space in vertical line, so probably to use it properly thumbnails have to be very small except if there is some mod to organize attachments to go in horizontal line.
So you can do a lot with single topic.

Thanks for the additional information, however, this topic is more than a year old and is marked as solved, so I am locking it.  Please avoid raising old topics in future.
