Try to set avatar url like this https://gravatar.com/avatar/00000000000000000000000000000000?d=mm
It will bi dropped to "No avatar".

SMF wasn't updated since that time (2.0.11 is almost a year old). And it's not sure if it'll be fixed in 2.0.12 as our minor updates are mostly security updates.

That topic gives you the fix, feel free to apply it ;)

use  http://gravatar.com/avatar/00000000000000000000000000000000?d=mm
without the 's' from https, it works in most cases.

https was announced in 2000
