Having problems with imported database, large sections of text are missing from posts in display template, but are present in post editor ('Modify'), and are restored to display template by clicking 'Save' in editor.

Display template shows this -

Saltwater IchSymptomsIdentification
Cryptocaryon is not too difficult to identify because of the characteristic white spots. The white spots are 0.5-2.0 mm in size and have a tendency to appear first on the pectoral fins. As a result, infected fish may swim with folded or clamped fins. As the disease progresses, the spots will become more wide spread and the eyes of the infected fish may become cloudy. A secondary fungal infection may also appear on the skin. If the infection is concentrated in the gills or is in the early stages, the fish may show irritation, respiratory distress, and lethargy without having any visual spots.

Post editor sees this -

Saltwater Ich (Cryptocaryon irritans)
Cryptocaryon irritans (Cryptocaryon) is a fully ciliated, protozoan parasite present in all saltwater environments, which causes a disease known as marine ich or marine white spot disease in wild and cultured marine fishes at temperatures between 59 and 86F. Cryptocaryon infections in fish are a significant disease problem for marine aquarists and commercial mariculture worldwide. Cryptocaryon is known to infect many different fish species, although there appear to be differences in susceptibility.

This widespread protozoan penetrates the skin and gills of the fish. Depending on the immune status of the fish, it can cause symptoms as mild as just a few small white spots to more severe symptoms including severe irritation, loss of appetite, lethargy, severe respiratory distress, and death.

Strain differences among different Cryptocaryon isolates from various parts of the world have been identified, and, although many have similar life cycles and salinity tolerances, others have been found to be outside previously described normal ranges. The possibility of different species of Cryptocaryon also has been suggested; but all Cryptocaryon isolates currently are considered to be members of one species.

Signs of infection, complex life cycle stages, and the explosiveness with which infection and deaths can occuroften within days in culture situations are similar in many ways to those seen for the freshwater parasite Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. However, the two are only distantly related, and major differences exist with regard to salinity tolerance and duration of life cycle. Accurate diagnosis and rapid response and treatment are necessary to reduce losses, which can be devastating

Symptoms

Everything between Saltwater Ich and Symptoms is missing until I click 'Modify', then 'Save' in post editor, which restores it to post in display template.  Missing text is there, display template doesn't see it, post editor does.  How are they reading it differently?

Database collation has always been utf-8.  As you can see if you scroll across the text, we're also having a problem with corrupt characters, but this is different.  The breaks in the content do not correspond to bad characters, and the missing text is visible in post editor, and saving it makes it visible in post.  Post editor sees it, display template does not until after it's saved in editor.

Should have said, the production database works fine, problems are occurring with export/import into new db.  It's not exporting correctly.

double check that the imported database is actually in utf-8, this includes the columns in the database tables. that is most likely your issue.

with the issue mentioned in that wiki article, the full text can always be seen when editing but not when viewing the message posted.

Sir Osis of Liver

All tables are utf-8, only at bottom ('Sum') it shows latin-1.  Will check into that further tonight.

Illori

just because the tables are utf-8 does not mean all the columns are as well.

Sir Osis of Liver

Took a quick look, don't see anything in phpmyadmin that displays column collation.

i know you can show it in phpmyadmin somewhere but i dont have access right now to check.

Sir Osis of Liver

Ran SHOW FULL COLUMNS FROM smf_members, all text fields are utf8_general_ci, all int fields are NULL.  Same in smf_messages.

Illori

have you checked the topics table as well?
