Upgrade from SMF 1.1.21 to current version

Our forum had been hacked and I had to do a restore and before I did the restore it had been unusable for a couple years.  I am looking to upgrade to the newest version.  The current one seems to not really work correctly anymore. It doesn't even pull up the option to upgrade anymore and the news feed doesn't work.  So when I upgrade will the theme that I am using still work?  IT is called AF316.  Also I am not sure how to upgrade this since in the past I just clicked on the button to upgrade.  Thank you for any help.

if you are going to upgrade to SMF 2.0 which is recommended your current theme will need to be replaced with a new one.
