no, that mod was installed "years" before we had issues

Note that one provider isn't the same as the other. That your site doesn't work on resource constrained heavily oversold shared hosting by BlueHost, doesn't mean it won't function on shared hosting with a decent provider. Judging by specs, VPS is absolute overkill.
