Can the Core theme be deleted?

Hello,

I tried to install  the ad management mod and it showed various failed tests in the core theme.
I don't remember to have ever edited the core theme, so this seems a bit strange.
I actually use another theme, but I keep the core theme because I don't know if it is necessary.

So my question is this:
What is the use of the Core theme?
Is it necessary? Can it safely be deleted? Could there be any dependencies from other themes to the core theme?

Maybe my confusion is due to the name (core) and the fact that it comes as default with smf install.

the theme listed as CORE can be deleted.

the theme listed as DEFAULT (also known as CURVE) can not be...

(core was the 1.1.x default design)
