Mail enable on my cloud server is not great
Too to may ISP's are blocking my forum's emails

I want to use my ISP's email server, but  I can't get it to work

In SMF, I have the mail server name correct and the user name correct and the port is set to 995

It seems my ISP has a couple additional settings to be able to send email out through their email server
(Look at my Thunderbird screen shot)
The account settings for the email server have these two additional settings that are required
Connection security: SSL/TLS
Authentication Method: Normal Password

Is there a way to add these settings to the SMF mail server setup?

EDIT: Forgot to mention that my ISP's mail server is a POP3 server

Saying it's POP3 is irrelevant because that is for receiving mail. In this case, we are sending it so we use SMTP. Just enter everything normally in your mail settings on your forums and, if you want SSL, add ssl:// before the host name.

Sorry, my brain is not in gear today

I am getting sending mail mixed up with fetching mail

I checked my smtp settings in Thunderbird for my ISP's mail server
So do this for the sever name?
ssl://smtp.xxxxxx.net

I set up the mail server in SMF and now I get this error message in the admin error log

"Couldn't get mail server response codes"

Mail type SMTP server
ssl://smtp.xxxxx.net

SMTP port
465

SMTP username
[email protected]

Doing it like that should work if your SMTP server is configured correctly.

You might also try SendMail if none of this works for you.

I get the bold error message shown in the post above yours adding ssl:// to the sever address
The problem with using mail senders on the server itself is that it my cloud server
My server keeps getting flagged as sending spam when all it is doing is sending mail to the forum members that request notifications

I am getting tired of going to these web sites and fill out the forms saying that I am not a spammer
Here's a typical email reply from hotmail
Hotmail, MSN, Live, Yahoo and others all send back these types of messages

Recipient: [SMTP:[email protected]]
Reason: 550 SC-001 (BAY004-MC4F11) Unfortunately, messages from 166.63.127.229 weren't sent.
Please contact your Internet service provider since part of their network is on our block list.

if your server is on a blocked list, there is nothing that SMF can do about it...

Please do not PM, IM or Email me with support questions.  You will get better and faster responses in the support boards.  Thank you.

I am not saying you should do anything about it
I am trying to use my ISP's mail server is all to send mail from the forum

Where are you reading that?

I was explaining why I do not want to use sendmail or any method that sends mail from my server

Forum History -> EZBoard -> YABB -> SMF 1.1.19 -> SMF 2.0.19

Arantor

He's reading it from the error you gave. The server is on a block list. No amount of SMF changes can fix that fact.

Forget about the error
That has nothing to do with SMF

I was explaining why I do not want to use sendmail or any method that sends mail from my server

All I am trying to do is set up my ISP's server as the send mail server

This is the message I get when I set it up using ssl:// in front of the server address

I set up the mail server in SMF and now I get this error message in the admin error log

"Couldn't get mail server response codes"

Mail type SMTP server
ssl://smtp.xxxxx.net

So basically, I can send email out through my ISP's mail server in Thunderbird, but SMF cannot do it.

Is that right?

is the email address you are sending from hotmail or live.com? if so they have your domain on their spam list. so no you cannot send from that domain.

FORGET ABOUT THAT MESSAGE
All I was doing was explaining to linkjay why I do not want to use sendmail or any mail sending method that involves my server

I want to send mail through my ISP's secure mail server

Again, here is the message I see in the admin error log when I set up my ISP's server in SMF
All the login info is set up the same as it is in thunderbird

"Couldn't get mail server response codes"

Mail type SMTP server
ssl://smtp.xxxxx.net

SMTP port
465

SMTP username
[email protected]

They are trying to say that that errror is directly caused by your domain being blocked by whichever domains you're using.

My ISP is not blocking any emails from my server
I get emails all day long from SMF forum notifications, PHP scripts and my shopping cart

The from address is my ISP's main email address just like I use in Thunderbird

Again, here is the setup in thunderbird that works just fine
All I want to do is have SMF send mail out through my ISP's mail server
