I have an old, but operational, SMF 1.1.11 installation that I want to upgrade to 2.0.x. As part of this, it'll be changing hosts.

What's the best way to stage this? The new machine will be on PHP 5.6; the old machine is on an ancient version.

Can I:

1. Copy the old database and Forum files to the new server (running 5.6), knowing that the existing 1.1 installation won't work on PHP 5.6
2. Install the upgrade package from 1.1.x to 2.0.x.
3. Run that on the new server to complete the upgrade?

Kindred

Copy the database and files
Place on new host
Run repair_settings.php and reset the paths, database and URLs
Confirm the setup works
Upgrade to 1.1.21

Confirm it works
Remove all 1.1.x themes other than default

Then upgrade to 2.0.13

Confirm it works

Thanks! That the new host is PHP 5.6 won't an issue for confirming that the 1.1.11 installation works?

Arantor

It will throw some warnings but nothing critical.
