After the upgrades am seeing lots of (around 20 %) unknown's in the online list (from legit ip's, not spam\bots) used to be just a very few now and then. ...maybe the htaccess redirect to https ?

Everything works, just remarking the change.

there is no error message on the who's online page when a user hits an unknown action it just says "unknown action" next to the user. i guess if you applied your trick, you dont see them any longer.

https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=467136.0 may help to show what is the unknown action so something may be able to be done about it.
