Newsletter 500 error 2.0.13, 2.0.14, PHP & SMTP

Just once I would like not to have to fight the newsletter system in SMF. We only send one maybe once a quarter, have done for 8 years, but it seems every time we do it in recent years, it throws a wobbly.

We last sent a newsletter in April 2017 using 2.0.13. We send it through the newsletter system, to one member group of about 290, selecting to override the notification settings of the user (in advanced) and then ticking Send this to these groups using personal messages.

We've used PHP to send it, and usually all's fine, apart from the odd hiccup of an 'educated' apostrophe needing to be straightened.

Today, I try to send it. It throw a 500 error within one iteration of sending out. I check the database, it's sent 2 PMs out of 290.

I test, use a small admin group of 3 of us to test it to, and it consistently fails after 2 messages.

I change the newsletter to a simple 2 line message, it continues to fail.

Ok, I update to 2.0.14 in the hope it's some quirk of 2.0.13 that didn't previously rear its head.

Version Information:
Forum version: SMF 2.0.14 (more detailed)
Current SMF version: SMF 2.0.14
GD version: bundled (2.1.0 compatible)
MySQL version: 5.6.35
Alternative PHP Cache: 4.0.11
PHP: 5.6.31
Server version: Apache

... same symptoms prevail.

I contact our host, who help me plug in SMTP details in the mail part of the admin panel. The forum 500 errors when we test until the port it set back to 25 for SMTP. (Mail queue is not switched on.)

Hurrah, it sends a simple message to 3 accounts.

It won't send the newsletter though.

(I can PM it normally to people...!)

We try figuring out which bit of the code might be triggering it. Anything that causes a 500 before it reaches 100% is tested, and will send in isolation, but not as part of the whole newsletter.

In frustration, we draft a short list version of the newsletter, deciding we can send that and post the full newsletter on the forum.

... it fails.

I have lost patience with the newsletter system now.

a) please can anyone help me try and work out what is causing this?
b) is there an alternative SMF newsletter system out there?

if you check the server error log does it have anything?

No errors are showing because the 500 errors include:

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

that is not your server error log. you should find it in your hosts control panel or look for an error_log or similar named file in your SMF folder.

My host's cpanel > metrics > error log showed no (related) errors which is why I quoted that part of the 500 error. The only errors it showed were that someone was trying to find a WordPress login page and ones relating to our wiki like:

I've gone to Admin -> Server Settings and ticked Disable evaluation of templates.



Retested by sending the PM code posted above, to the membergroup of 3 people. It has successfully sent!

Tested by sending our original PM code, 500 error immediately on sending (1 PM generated)

Tested again with the original PM code, 2 PMs sent then 500 error.

There are no errors showing in the cpanel error log, no new errors in the smf error_log file.

New Hogwarts timetable, school calendar, etc. to come as we approach September timeline, along with year group transition of character titles etc. Career changes for leaving students are welcomed. If one is not received by the time the year group transition is made, a character will receive 'witch' or 'wizard' status.

Can you try to send a small newsletter test again and see if a new entry is generated in the error_log. The last entries are from middle of July and April from what you pasted

Hello vbgamer45,

I ran a simple newsletter to our admin group of 3 accounts - just the prepopulated text with 1 line of text added. It successfully sent.

I then tried to resend our formatted newsletter to the same group, and it returned an error after sending 2/3 messages.

The error_log file in the directory has not updated, and still reads:

The cPanel error log is empty.

Additionally, since upgrading to 2.0.14 we are now seeing intermittent 500 errors throughout the site.

Have upped to 7, but it has made no difference.

Two tests = both 500 errored before completion.

No new errors, but I'm now unable to access the following in the admin area:

  Security and Moderation

Instead of the full 500 error message, just get the chrome browser 500 response or a white screen in firefox.

Going to try going back to php 5.6 as I was able to access that bit earlier in this thread.
