How can I prevent users signing up with a .ru account please?

just add a ban for *@*.ru

Admin -> Members -> Ban list -> Add new ban
and under
Ban on Email Address (e.g. *@badsite.com) add *@*.ru

Any other way of banning the country other than using that option please?

other option would be doing the ban via .htaccess but wildcards will be same
