Convert errors...VB 3.7 to SMF 2.0.14

So, I was getting:

Unknown system variable 'SQL_MAX_JOIN_SIZE'

So I searched around, and found a few instances of this happening. After following instructions in http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=528263.0, and removing said code from two places, I get

500 - Internal server error.

VB has gone nuts with their pricing, as far as I can tell, and I've been running SMF on another forum for a few years now with no difficulties...well, no difficulties I couldn't figure out through searching and trying things.

I've created an empty database (except for the welcome message), gotten SMF 2.0.14 running. I've had to drop the schema and start over due to some error in the convert that wiped everything.

The original VB database and the new SMF database are running on the same server.
The original VB structure in on the same server - but the site isn't running. I'm pretty sure it doesn't need to, the files just need to be there.
SMF is operational, has one admin account, and one welcome message.

Everything is on the same VM, and I own both the VM and the host it's all running on.

Just can't figure this one out. I've tried every fix I could find in the community forums here. Any ideas?

Edit: Both database are UTF-8, so that shouldn't be a problem.

*NOTE: There are two forums running, and the logs reflect both servers.

And it gets far enough to wipe out the database each time....I debate every time if I should rebuild it, and have done a couple times with no change.

that is not the error log, that is the log of all the hits on the server.

You are correct. OK, then there is no error log. I can turn on error logging for PHP. Seems like there are no IIS errors, though.

I would turn on php error log and see if that shows more detail it might.

Dropped the schema, reinstalled SMF, same directory, same database user,

I turned on all logging in PHP....right now it's sitting at "Converting members..."

....I really hope it works. First time I've seen this message. And I checked the status in MySQL Workbench....I see it doing....something.

Strange. 4 connectioons, 3.21KB/s, 0 InnoDB reads/sec, and 0 InnoDB writes/sec. InnoDB buffers at 48.4%

And the new database is gone.

So the page is just stopped.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated. I like SMF quite a bit. Love to get it going again.

There is no PHP error log. It hasn't created one yet, so nothings happening. I turned it on with the "E_ALL" directive.

Edit: No, the database is there. I failed to refresh.
