The only way I could patch to 2.0.14 was to chmod all simplemachines folder in my server to 777.
Is this a security issue?
What is the default permission level for the folders?

It depends on your host, maybe the default permissions are 755 for directories and 644 for files, while in other hosts it might be 777 and 666.

I'm running it on amazon ec2, so I have total control.
I noticed the cache folder must be set at 777 or I'll get a warning message.
However I'd like to give minimum privileges no matter what is said, that 777 isn't that dangerous after all.
So, is there a guideline somewhere with permissions for various folders/files?
