Safe to increase subject length from 80 to 255?

As the title says I'm wondering if there are any downsides of making the change from 80 chars to 255 (database limited)

It will make processing and searches slower, use more database space as well (remember, every message contains the title) and you need to change the code that actually checks the length.

I'm always baffled by the desire to increase the subject length, especially to what might be (but almost certainly isn't) the database limit. Making each topic title one and a half old-tweets in length seems bizarre.

Unless the intent is to only post links, in which case a forum is the wrong tool anyway.
