I installed that particular Mod thinking that it might help me with my issue (which it really hasn't so far). I simply want an easy way to link pictures I have put into a sub folder in the SMF system into forum posts.

You have denied access to that folder, so it's not a SMF issue.

Creating a .htaccess file in the image directory with the following might work...

Also your file permission is 0640 if the file is not owned in the web group the Apache can't access it. Changing to 0644 would allow that.
