Upgrade database question

Due to a very rare server crash yesterday a file was shown as in use when the system came back.  I repaired the table no problem and the forum is back (checked for errors in forum admin, there were a couple and I also repaired them).
Our hosters have commented that our database is out of date and may benefit from being upgraded:

Table './oursite_smf1/smf_messages' is marked as crashed and should be repaired
File: /home/ourhost/public_html/Sources/Recent.php
Line: 1035

Note: It appears that your database may require an upgrade. Your forum's files are currently at version SMF 2.0.15, while your database is at version 2.0.11. The above error might possibly go away if you execute the latest version of upgrade.php.
I have to say I'm always of the mind "if it's not broken don't fix it" but is there an issue here?  I have never updated the database only the SMF forum.
Questions:
Are there any benefits to upgrading?
Are there any risks in upgrading – will my forum still work?
Where do I find details of the current database version?
How do I do an upgrade?
Here are my SMF file details:-

Illori

there are no database changes since SMF 2.0. you can ignore that error message safely.
