On my site I have some private boards, with member groups assigned and invisible to regular members. I now have to manually add the G.M. to the member group every time
Shouldn't the Global Moderator automatically have access to these (all) boards? All boxes are ticked in the G. M permissions

No. What if you want to have an admin only board for example? Global moderator is not admin.

You can however edit the global moderator membergroup, and tick all the boards you want them to have access to from the "Visible boards" ;)
