BBCode tags showing in social media posts

Thank you, I'll make a post with an image embedded and see if that changes anything on social media posts.

I made a post with an image embedded and that seems to have done the trick, turning off search engine friendly URLS that is.

Thank you everybody! ;D

njtweb

Follow up.....

After turning off search engine friendly URLs and testing the social media posting, everything worked for a couple days. Now that I've been using the default URL's for a few days, it's back to the same thing it was before, "ALL" bbcode tags are showing as well as the URL's wrapped in them, again.

I've added nothing and changed nothing since testing.

OK, so something is very seriously wrong.

The content of your post as far as the RSS feed is concerned (which is where Dlvr.it gets it from):

[img]https://www.youthhockeyinfo.com/Themes/default/images/buffalo_jr_sabres_small.jpg[/im...

So first up how is that 'report error' thing getting into the post? Should it be there?

I have no idea what that is. All Dlvr.It asks for is the RSS feed link to create the social feed post.

Arantor

That's what's inside your RSS feed.

The first thing inside your RSS feed content is a 'report issue' button. Did you add this yourself to the post?

I'm sorry, no. I have an image embedded at the top right of every post, "reporterror.png" and the hyperlink is to the feedback form. I don't have any verbiage with the words report issue.

There is verbiage within the post "report it by responding" but thats it it's not hyperlinked or anything.

Arantor

Yes, I already know you've done that, I can see you've done that. My question: do you put that image in yourself when you make the post or do you have some process to do it for you automatically?

(And yes, I'm fully aware you have no text that says 'report issue'. You have an image that has the text 'report error' in it that links to a page you've made in TinyPortal, which I referred to as a 'button' because that is the canonical name for a rounded-rectangle-shaped element with affordances that suggest to be pressed, and that 'report issue' is approximately the same meaning as 'report error', as in that is what you're hoping users will do, tell you about problems they're having. I just didn't expect to have to spell it out in such detail because I'd assume you knew what I meant by 'the "report issue" button in the post' which seems clear enough as to relate what I'm talking about. In future I will remember to be explicit about such detail to avoid any misunderstandings.)

Kindred

what Arantor just said...

Are you manually adding that "report" button in every post that you make, or is it programmatically added?
Because that image and the link are actually IN the post. They are not an external image button that just gets displayed in the post area... that is INSIDE the post text.

As to why it's appearing like it is...
you are using the RSS feed.
because you have that report image and its URL as the first thing in every post... The RSS feed is pulling only PART of the NEXT IMG information.
Since the URL is not complete and there is no closing IMG tag, I would hazard a guess THAT is why Facebook is only getting that information.
You either need to expand the amount of text in the RSS summary or NOT put an image to be the first thing in your post.

Gotcha, yes I unfortunately do create every post. They take a while, I copy another posts layout into a text file and use that as a template to create each post one by one so I don't have to type everything out each time. I just copy and paste the info I need from Google maps, and the myhockey database to create each independent team post.

Sorry.

Sorry, my line of business is communications, I know enough to get by my site, when it gets beyond my technical knowledge, I try to keep up and be as explicit as possible.

This is how every post is formatted, I obviously changed the brackets on the bbcode tags so I could post the example.

so, you paste that into every post.

and that's your problem right there.

I'd argue it shouldn't be embedded into the post anyway because it's not really part of the post content (which also means it will do things like show up inside search results too) but instead put into the theme, or maybe into the menu somewhere.

Kindred

yup... If it is in the first post of every thread, I'd suggest adding it into display.template.php.... you can even tweak the CSS to have it appear in the same spot - without actually being part of the post.

Ok fair enough but why would that be a problem? Posts have embedded images and URL's all the time on other bulletin board sites and I don't see the BBCode tags in the social media posts.

This is the layout of every team post so they all look professionally formatted. Does that mean I can't copy from my text editor after I've changed all of the pertinent team related details anymore?

As far as adding to the display template, I would love to do anything to make this job faster and more streamlined but I can't do that because there are other forums on my site for discussing youth hockey. These posts are only the team posts for every league.

Kindred

did you read what I wrote?

Because your image URLs are so long, the SECOND image URL gets cut off... and thus is never parsed... and thus is interpreted as text... and thus displays as text to facebook.

it will happen any time you have a BBC which is not fully opened and closed within the text extract

Well, it's completely possible to limit content to specific boards whether that's done by code or something else.

For a non-edit solution I'm pretty sure you could even do it with the ad management mod to add something there under the menu, show only in specific boards and just put the code in there (you'd have to use HTML rather than BBC but the relevant code is actually quoted in my post above where the bbc parser converted it to HTML in your RSS feed)

Failing that it could be done in a piece of code to limit to specific boards but you'd have to tell us which boards it was first...

My site is going to grow exponentially as I add more hockey leagues. Every league is broken down by geographical area and assigned accordingly in it's specific category "North, South, Central". Each league within those categories has it's own forum and then under that forum has each team in that league as a child board. I was actually about to invest in a custom template to post team child boards I'm glad I'm learning all of this now.
