I want to write a PHP script to check the members list. Has anyone done this or can someone tell me where to look?

What do you mean by check the member list? Who has only logged in once, who hasn't logged in 3 years, that sort of thing?

I'm writing a PHP script for a project and want to use simple machines formum for the paid membership capabilities. So if their username would not exist in the database then their contribution to the external web page would be deleted.

I've done this before I make a page that only a certain membership can get to by using a URL referral in PHP

So, use paid subscriptions, make sure they put into the correct group and then query the members table - maybe using SSI but it's not clear in what context you're trying to do this.
