updated, now blank screen

just succesfully ran the update to latest version and when i reload or vist the page it is nothing but a blank white page.
what could be happening?

What did you update from?

My first guess without any other clues would be PHP version - check you're on PHP 5.4 or higher.

ok, i was able to restore the home dorectory back to what it was prior to the blank screen.
this is the current Detailed Version Check:

according to cpanel i am on PHP version PHP version: 5.6.30

EDIT i just looked again, i was on 5.3 (5.6.30 was database version.
I have the option of changing it all the way up to 7.2
What is best?

I changed it to 5.5 and reran the upgrade, no issue.
PHP version was the issue.

I'm not sure I'd trust cPanel about this.

Try running a PHP info file to see what version of PHP is currently running: What is a phpinfo() file?

The fact that it broke going from 2.0.13 to either 2.0.14 or 2.0.15, and that it works again just by downgrading suggests you're not running PHP 5.6 but something lower.

PHP 5.6 is currently the oldest supported version, everything 5.5 and lower is eol.  SMF 2.0.14 and higher will run in 5.6, 7.0, 7.1, although some mods will have problems in 7.0/7.1.

ok, thank you, ill change it to 5.6 to be safe though it sems to be running on 5.5
