Hi all,

I am pretty new to forum software and this is the first time i am setting up my own forum. Now i've got SMF installed but for some reason i can't upload an Avatar and also the smileys don't work. I've tried it on the standard theme and also on the Nightbreeze theme i've downloaden. Anybody who can help me with this? I've tried reinstalling a few times but no luck so far.

SMF version is 2_0_15
Mods i have is Simple audio embedder , nothing else atm

Thanks in advance!

if you dont know how to change the permissions on the folders via your hosts control panel/FTP, ask your host to modify the permissions for you.

Did you actually check that the attachments upload directory is writable?

How do I chmod? / what is chmod?

All file permissions are currently on 775 ... do they need to be higher? My hosting provider is asking this question.

QuoteSMF will work well with settings of 755 for directories and 644 for files -- on most webservers. If you have questions, check with your host for more information about how your webserver is set up. Some webhosts allow permissions of 777 on directories and 666 on files. On other hosts, these settings will cause 500 errors when anyone tries to look at your SMF website.

your hosting provider should know how they set things up and what should work, if 755 does not work 777 is a last resort.

Thanks again for your reply! Even when the attachments and smiley files are on 777 it doesnt work.

then go back to your host and ask them to fix it, if they can fix it find a new host.

your host should be able to fix this without issue.

Go to Admin>Forum>Attachements and avatars...>Avatar Settings

Check the Upload directory in Uploadable Avatars

The Avatar issue was a wrong path, so that's fixed. But the smileys path doesn't seem to be the problem.

If this works https://forum.mr-gaming.nl/Smileys/default/angel.gif [nofollow] what should be the base url and absolute path?

Sorry for all my questions but i am really new to this

Base url should be  https://forum.mr-gaming.nl/Smileys

The absolute one I wouldn't know, I think you should run the repair_settings tool and fix all of your paths in case any other paths are wrong

What is repair_settings.php?
