email notifications

The users are reporting that they receive continuously (hundreds) of emails with the notification of new messages in the threads that follow but in reality there is no new message.
Is there any way to reset the notifications?

Unless that is a 2.1 bug you may want to check the headers of the emails to see what they say or your mail server logs.
