I'm pretty sure I saw a mod for this a while back but I don't know the actual terminology to find it. I've tried various criteria similar to users online reading topics  but can't find it.

Admin -> Configuration -> Themes and Layout -> Theme Settings -> (Theme) -> Show who is viewing the board index and posts ?
