Is there a mod for this? Or is there a way to make it possible?

Thank you

Kindred

it's a theme thing.... by default the buttons appear on both the top of the thread/page and the bottom.

My comprehension isn't so good here. I'm assuming you mean I can change that in the default curve theme settings? If that is the case I don't see the option to do so.

Thank you

SychO

There is no setting, you need to get your hands dirty and edit Display.template.php

Ok, thank you SychO. That's not happening, my site will be down the second I touch PHP code. LOl

no those do not appear on both top and bottom as they are message specific and not the buttons at the top and bottom of the topic view.

Yep. Use SMF 2.1. The buttons have been moved to where you want them. ( I managed to talk the team into that back in alpha days. :D I've always thought it was far more logical from a user's perspective.)

I can't use 2.1. I'm too vested into 2.0.15. Way too many customizations and plugins to move.

Arantor

There will come a point that SMF 2.0 will stop working - somewhere around PHP 8, I would expect, where you'll need many patches (and SMF team will not be able to patch them for you) as PHP moves on and gets rid of bad habits.

Ok, is there any way to make my site transition from 2.0.15 to 2.1 seemless with the plugins and customizations I have? I will hire somebody here to do this of course.

Arantor

All things are possible to do - but without knowing how extensively your site is modded, it's impossible to say how much effort that might be.

Basically I'd like everything to look and function as it currently is

As Arantor says you will need to move to 2.1 at some point anyway, but if you'd prefer to put that off until after the Final version is released I probably have some 2.0 template files sitting around with the relevant modification. God knows I made plenty of the things at one point or another. I'll take a look through my stash and see what's there.

njtweb

I might as well move it. I never knew the script expires based on PHP version. That's no problem, I do have a couple questions though.

I've put a lot of money into my site being extremely particular about page rank. My site has been active for a year and a half now and I'm placing pretty well in search results. Do URL's change in 2.1? And can the site be a mirror change as in the entire root stays the same?

Before anybody says duh, stupid or anything like that. I don't know so these questions are legit and logical from somebody with no idea how the upgrade will work.

Antechinus

No, url's will not change.

If you want a 2.0x file let me know. It's a pretty simple change, but I just have to check the CSS to make sure it plays nicely with the default theme.

I apologize but I don't understand what is meant by you having the 2.0 files? I'm currently running 2.0.15 which is the end of 2.0. Arantor said I'll have to upgrade at some point to 2.1 so basically I have no idea how to make any of the plugins work with 2.1. My hope is that whoever I hire is able to salvage the plugins and make them work with 2.1 so I don't lose any of the site functionality which I and my visitor traffic have grown accustomed to.

Thank you

I mean edited copies of the 2.0.x index.css, Display.template.php and Profile.template.php, so you can run the customised button position on 2.0.x.

Offhand I don't know how long 2.0.x will be patched, or what the team sees as its end of life date. As far as I know there has been no announcement of 2.0.15 being the last patch for 2.0.x.

PHP8 is only a proposal at the moment, and will not be ready for production use for some time.

Ok, thank you. In your professional opinion what would you consider "some time" for php 8? A year, 2, more? Thank you

Arantor

The official roadmap for 8.0 has it down for Q4 2020 where things will *definitely* stop working without major work. All of the issues you'll have seen around 'create_function' are the start of things breaking in 7.2 and what's going through 7.4 may also have some more breakage to contend with - it's not finalised what's in it yet.

But 8.0 is the point at which things that currently are 'will work but will drop a lovely warning' will become 'do not work'. As it is, PHP 5.6 goes unsupported in January, as does PHP 7.0.
