SMF email verification Issue - Please Help!

I just hope am posting this in the right place.

My major challenge on my forum is getting the email notification and verification of new members to work. I have searched and read a lot of articles although most dated back to 2010 yet none have solved my problem.

Without verification and notification emails, I am so blind to my forum and so I need help. Any help to get the Gmail smtp set up or any other alternatives will really be helpful

The cpanel email settings I use d is correct but not working.
