Is this the official RC2 released by SMF right? Have you tried with latest GitHub build? https://github.com/SimpleMachines/SMF2.1

Also, can you please leave more details about your current setup? PHP version, MySQL version, any errors in your server log...

Is there the same result with both official RC2 release and latest build from GitHub? Are there any errors in your server error log?

Try upping the PHP version to 7.0 or 7.1.

I installed SMF v2.1 RC2 (from the Full install archive) on my localhost (19 Aug 2019) and got the same blank page on step 2. Refreshing the page brought it back, and I could successfully continue to the last step. Try this before you make a lot of changes to your setup.

I was already running SMF v2.0.15 on my localhost in another directory ("Folder") with another database. I wanted to see what changes a regular user might see in the new version.

It  would appear that there may be a glitch in the install.php or some file that it calls. Both info33 and I saw the lockup at step 2. Both of us installed 2.0.15 (or upgraded to it from an earlier version). My localhost installation proceeded to Step 3 after refreshing the page, while info33's backtracked to Step 1.

     My localhost has
Windows 7, installing with Internet Explorer 11
Apache 2.4.23 Win64
MySQL  Server 5.6
PHP     5.6.27

BTW, (minor glitch) there is a misnamed file for the Admin page. The calling page wants to see:
\Themes\default\images\helptopics.gif, but what is there is:
\Themes\default\images\helptopics.png

I recently (18 Aug 2019) loaded the WampServer x64 v 3.17 onto my Windows 10 machine for localhost, but it needs some serious tweaking. I may just dump it and download the current versions of WAMP from their websites. SMF 2.1RC2 (from SMF Downloads) did install, but both the install and the forum are not what the coder(s) expected.

Were you both attempting to use IP addresses as your URL?   Were you both specifying ports?

What happens if you leave port blank?   Or specify a "localhost" for server?

Do you have business accounts (the only accounts that have fixed IP addresses)?

My initial suspicion is there is a wrinkle with using IPs or ports.

I would leave server name at it's default - localhost - & port blank.

** I would definitely use the latest GH, not RC2, at this point. **
** An important clarification:  The "Database Server Settings" describes how to connect to your DB, not your forum. **

shawnb61 ,

I did not keep notes when I installed SMF 2.1rc2 on my localhost (Windows 7).  To call the install.php routine, I used "localhost" in my URL. I  ran the installer again today (21 Aug 2019) with files in another local directory. On the "Database Server Settings" page, I saw:

"Server name:" with "localhost" already filled in, and
"Database port:" with "Leave blank to use the default"

which is probably what I did. I quit before advancing past the "Database Server Settings" page, since I did not need to install another forum.

I removed the WampServer from my Windows 10 computer. When I get the WAMP set up there (with files from the original sources) I will install SMF 2.1rc2 on the localhost there and take notes. Stay tuned!

I dont understand what you mean by "error no valid camp" - can you provide more info there?

Are you supposed to specify an ip address for your database server?  That seems pretty unusual.

shawnb61,

From what I see, it is possible that English is not info33's first language. He or she may be using translation software. Please be patient with this. I follow a couple of Greek singers (Despina Vandi and Peggy Zina). Google Translate comes up with some amusing and interesting interpretations!

My hobby website, and the one that I was trying to help, use Coppermine Photo Gallery (CPG) as an integral part of their hobby operations. CPG absolutely will not run on PHP 7. Setting up the WAMP from scratch (I uninstalled WampServer) on my Windows 10 machine is proving more difficult than it should be. I am anxious to try the SMF 2.1rc2 install on my localhost there.

I would suggest php5.6 if 7 isn't a possibility.

I would also suggest using the latest 2.1 from github, it is much improved over the RC2 download.

I use EasyPHP on my Win10 computer.  It is very simple to get up & running.  It does need some light configuration, for example, to enable https & some buffer size increases are needed to do large DB imports.
