ok probably a silly question but just want to make sure
since I'm not using the core theme, it's safe to remove it, yes?
it's just an additional theme that happens to be named core, correct?
it's not really important?

thank you

Gary

Sure, if you're not using it, you can just delete it. Only the default theme needs to be kept.

thank you  :)
just wanted to make sure... as it was named core...

Kindred

It was named core, because it was a ported version of the 1.1.x theme of that name (which was the default theme for 1.1.x) :)

In theory, shouldn't you remove it in SMF admin > Theme settings before you actually delete it? Otherwise it'll still show in the list of themes in "Manage and Install".

Arantor

Pretty sure that's what Gary means.

'delete' and 'remove' are used somewhat interchangeably in SMF.

Illori

I read it as delete the files and be done with it. in that case it still needs to be removed from the admin panel.
