User links changed to https

I have an SSL certificate installed and configured for my forum. I have 'Force SSL throughout forum' enabled, but I honestly don't remember if I enabled it or if that was the default. I suspect the former.

The problem I'm having is when my members post a link, the forum changes it to https, which generates browser warnings and freaks people out. Can I turn off force SSL without negative effects? What will change if I do?

Or, is there something else at play that is causing the links to be changed besides the 'force SSL'?

Thanks!

Did you run repair settings to change all the urls and paths to https?  If you're running SMF 2.1 I believe that's the one you should be running, it's on GitHub.

Converting to https, step-by-step

Thank. Yes, I just installed it again, and everything looks good.

Is it OK to disable 'Force SSL', or is there something else changing the member posted links from http to https?

Glad that sorted it for you.

You need to keep forcing https, otherwise people will be served up the insecure version of your site and get browser warnings.

I made no changes, just confirmed that it was set up correctly. I still have the problem of user-posted URLs being changed to https.

If a user posts a link that begins http:// ,  when I hover over the link, my browser shows it as being https:// , which when clicked throws an error screen. How do I fix this?

Did you add that as an entry in Censored Words?

http:// ?  I have no censored words set.

I tried it with force SSL turned off and there is no change to the system or the problem. Tried it in a different browser, even cleared cache twice.

Weird. What mods do you have installed?

EzPortal, and Login Menu Button

normally, the force https does not affect links posted by users....    it only affects the URLs on the server and forces everyone to us the https version of your forum.

There is nothing in the core product which would be automatically forcing/changing a link posted in a message to change from http to https....

I asked for the link, wondering if it was a browser plugin doing this but it's not, it's coming out of the core code.

Which is concerning as I see no obvious reason why it would, though it did teach me there is a new easter egg since I last stared at the bowels of the parser code.

Do you think it could be a Mod? I've uninstalled all but one, which is giving me errors on the pre-uninstall check.

You said you only had two mods installed, which one won't un-install ?  You might need to visit the support topic for that mod.

Just took a look at the site as admin.  Strange thing,  the links behave normally in preview, it's just when they're posted that they change.  Can't see anything else amiss, apart from the default theme has been modified.

Thank you for taking a look at it!

The theme changes are just CSS, so that wouldn't do it. Do you think it could be the sole remaining mod?
