anyone know how to set the personal message menu on the left show as default?

as default for all users, or default for your account? this also changes the menu to be on the side in other locations as well not just in the PM area.

For yourself only it's Profile -> Look and Layout -> Use sidebar menus instead of dropdown menus when possible.

You can set it for all members in Admin -> Current Theme -> Member Options.
