Going back to the inappropriate images. On my forum I modified one of @dougiefresh's mod:

This enables users to determine if their post is inappropriate. I was inspired by a feature TW uses:

I believe you can mod this to a PM's system and warn the user that if they click it, they are going straight to hell.

2.0 has a buddy system too and you can restrict PMs to buddies only if you want but it isn’t default behaviour and doesn’t have UI to make that so, let alone make it mandatory.

Lol thanks for pointing this out after all these years of using SMF I did not know that 2.0 had that feature

PM's are essential! They facilitate many useful matters (eg private discussion of an item in a for sale thread), exchange of bank details etc

I don't think there is any way even admins can look at PM's unless they are reported ?!

In the smaller forums I've been involved with there has never been any issue of serious conflict via PM, much less the theoretical situations described.

On larger forums (and I mean a mate's forum being one of the bigger SMF forums out there) I don't believe such serious issues raised (grooming, dick pics) has ever been an issue either.

On that forum (and many others) users do value their privacy so some sort of excessive monitoring to protect against an edge case scenario would likely see the popularity of the forum plummet.

Adverse behaviour, if people are upset enough about it, gets reported and the person dealt with (or not) appropriately.

A means of restricting personal messages to 'friends' might be a partial solution but people have so many virtual 'friends' these days...

Please do not PM, IM or Email me with questions on astrophysics or theology.  You will get better and faster responses by asking homeless people in the street. Thank you.

To paraphrase Kindred: "There are no technical solutions to social problems."

No hack nor blackhats, just persistent asshats.

The situations I mentioned are not theoretical or hypothetical. They are situations I have had o deal with
