What is [pre] ... [/pre] preformatted text and how do i use it ?

I looked up https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Help:Formatting but that didn't help.

Have i been missing out on something and if so, how does it work please ?
The configuration of my Linux VPS (SMF 2.0 with 160+ mods & some assorted manual tweaks) can be found here and notes on my mods can be found here (warning: those links will take you to a drug related forum). My (House) music DJ dedication page is here

Basically
             it
                allows
                                 you
       to
                       position

                 your

                                               text
                                                          where
                                                                            you

                 want
                          and

                          it
                                      will

                         preserve

                                       white

                      space

           so

                                                        it

                  will

                               stay

                                                         exactly

                  as
                               you

                                          typed

                               it.  Like I have here.

Also

            usually
                        uses

                a

Sod this for a game of soldiers.  :)  Also usually uses a monospaced font
so each character takes up the same amount of space.
