Problem with dB error messages

Not sure if this is related to the upgrade to 2.0.16 and 2.0.17, respectively...
At around the time I did those upgrades I started getting daily messages:

"There has been a problem with the database!
This is a notice email to let you know that SMF could not connect to the database, contact your host if this continues."

Initially I got perhaps two per day, but since about a week ago it has jumped to about four to five per hour!!  However, each time I check the forum everything looks normal.

What could be causing this and what should I do? Just switch off notifications?

1st of all check with the host, if they are having temporary server hiccups.
2.0.19, php 8.0.30, MariaDB 10.6.18. Mods: Contact Page, Like Posts, Responsive Curve, Search Focus Dropdown, Add Join Date to Post.

^ Those are usually transient server errors, you get a notification when a visitor accesses the forum and database connection fails.  If they're infrequent it's no big deal, but if it's a regular thing your host should correct it, or you should move to a better host.

Thank you for your answers!

To a10:
Only as a last resort, that is when I'have decided on another host.
The two major problems I had with them showed that they never provide details of problems. Last time a whole server was offline for six days which they attributed to hardware problems. They reinstated files from trash because they had no backups. That was the second time the SMF forum was sacked by them in two months.

To SOoL:
Does this also apply to bots attempting to register?
I noted increased activity that according to the error log are tries to register, banned users obviously trying to get in, and what is listed as "256: Hacking attempt..."

The more activity you have on the forum, the more likely db connection errors will happen if you're on a crappy or overloaded server.  The errors are triggered by page loads.

Thanks, I got what you mean clearly.  :)
Actually, I'm ready to move, but cannot decide on a new host. I have shortlisted a few like A2, Hawkhost, Geekhost, and a Dutch one. Are you still with Hawkhost? If so, would you still recommend them? They are not with EIG, I assume?

Sir Osis of Liver

I've been with Crocweb for a while now, they're inexpensive, reliable, and service is excellent.  I've moved somewhere around 7-8 forums there off other hosts, and all have been very pleased with the service.
