503 error after enabling URL rewriting for PrettyURLs

I seem to have gotten stuck after "Enable URL rewriting".  I'm getting a 503 error.  The URLs are correct in the little window before I clicked enable.

I upgraded to 2.1 RC2.  How can I recover the error?
