I've just installed Ubuntu 18 and upgraded the board to 2.0.17.

I want to complete the configuration of the server at home as much as possible, before bringing it back to the datacenter.

Now I want to convert my board to https while the server is still here at home, with a local temporary static ip address.

In my windows hosts file I've added my domain name to resolve directly to the local server.

So my questions is can I already convert to https, are is this only possible in the datacenter where the official ip-address is assigned to the server?

You can do a self signed certificate maybe. Ideally thouh you can buy a domain now then order an ssl to get the certificate ready for your server.
Lets encrypt you can do for free as well link https://certbot.eff.org/

I already have the domain. I want to use https://certbot.eff.org/ [nofollow]

but can i use this to configure my official domain, while the server is still at home with temporary ip?

Sure if the domain is pointed to the IP then you can.  The IP doesn't matter. You can move the certificate to one machine or another.

Various URLs may still be in sync, but directory names likely need to be changed.  Unless you can emulate the directory structure, too?

If not, you have to run repair_settings on the target server anyway.

Why do you need to change directory structures?

Usually file paths change when you upload from a home computer to a webhost/server which is why repair settings is needed.
