PHP requirements - New install 2.1 RC2 - Install script error message

I am attempting to install two new versions of SMF to conduct some tests. They are being installed on a separate shared server space to my working forum.
The two versions are 2.0.17 and 2.1 RC2.

I have configured PHP for version 7.2 and set all the PHP options to exceed the requirements listed in the 'SMF 2.1 Install and Upgrade Guide' (readme.html). I also checked with the host regarding GNU Aspell (3.1.20) and the GD library (2.8.0).
File and folder permissions have been checked.

The 2.0.17 install script proceeds normally and says...

We've completed some initial tests on your server and everything appears to be in order. Simply click the "Continue" button below to get started.

However the 2.1 RC2 script says...

Warning! You do not appear to have a version of PHP installed on your webserver that meets SMF's minimum installations requirements.

These messages are being generated by the very same PHP configuration on the same shared server space.

I'm missing some small thing and can't figure out what it is. Even though I have been installing SMF since 2004, this is the first time the install script has stopped me.
Can anyone suggest what I might be missing? If there is any more info I can post that might help, please let me know.

Can you create a phpinfo() page and run on the same directory of your 2.1 RC2 page I want to see what the PHP version string is.

Make sure it is applied to the site level. Sometimes it is not applied. Or requires a .htaccess change when using cpanel.

Thanks vbgamer, you nailed it.
The htaccess file was full of stuff from previous test installations including a line to set the PHP version to the lower number.
SMF 2.1 now working.
