This is probably something that was asked many times here, but I can't find.

So, I've finished making my own theme by just editing files in the default (curve) theme. But now I want to make it a separate theme and I don't really know how. I've tried just downloading the folder with the theme, putting it into a zip archive and installing it - didn't worked, just gave me no theme.

So how do you do it properly?

Thanks, but could you be a bit more specific? I don't know which part covers my exact situation. I don't have time right now to read through everything you've linked and most of it I already know. I've made the theme I want. I just need to figure out how to install it as a separate one and not brake things.

From there you can see the files that are necessary/vital for a theme and the ones that you could remove for a custom theme.
Additionally the other relevant point you are looking for is the theme_info.xml file which it's mentioned and links to the wiki here: https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Theme-info.xml
