Can SMF be installed as a stand alone on a diskdrive?

just wondering if it can be done without  "hosting" to try out different things?

External hard drives are so cheap now it would be nice to have a stand-alone forum running at home.

Not as a real standalone, but you can install a local w/lamp package and with that, run SMF on basically any computer.
