You are using this one: THIS is 2.1.
Running SMF 2.1 with latest TinyPortal at www.fjr-club.nl

while there are some sites that are using 2.1 rc4, it's not really recommended to use live just yet as there will be bugs and need to be updated constantly

there's also limited themes and mods as most are waiting for 2.1 final to update their themes/mods

but yes smf here has gone ahead and switched to 2.1 rc4 because well what better way to finish up testing in a live environment than here itself

many have 2.1 rc4 (or 3 or 2) running on sites but they are mostly just for testing purposes :)

I do. See signature below 8)

And one of my sites here, https://thegardenmachineryforum.co.uk Though it's also running TinyPortal.

I'd link mine which was at one point SMF 2.1 but it's been so heavily changed it can't really be called SMF any more :(

Will there be an upgrade from  2.1 RC4 to 2.1 final or will it have to be installed from scratch?

And is the default theme for 2.1 RC4 responsive?  I notice that this site works ok with a phone.

Aleksi "Lex" Kilpinen

There will be a large upgrade package that can be used for 2.0 and 2.1 RCx just as well.
There will not be a patch update route however.

To make sure that I understand, a patch would be desirable if you've done a lot of site modification?

The large upgrade will bring everything over but in a 'stock' state?

Correct.

One more pestering question and then I'll give it a break for the day.  :D

Will there be a translator/converter for phpbb 3.3 -> smf 2.1 when the final is released?

I've been wanting to convert my site over for some time but I've been waiting for 2.1 to release.

Diego Andrés

You could convert to smf 2.0.x and then run the large upgrade to 2.1  :P

pulgoki

I'm toying around with that now using test forums.  I'm running in to the infamous password problem.

I assume I'll hit the no admin access too so I'm working through them.

If it goes well, I may convert my forum over in the next month or so.

landyvlad

Well that will be a bugger. I was hoping to be able to do a large upgrade from RC4 to final when the time comes.

Ah well cest la vie.

So, this support forum is 2.1 RC4?  I was looking at the default install of 2.018, and this support forum looks ALOT better -- ALOT of things are fixed & improved.  So, I guess I'll install this 2.1RC4 instead, and start with that.

you'll be able to do the large upgrade, just not a patch upgrade

just keep in mind that 2.1rc4 is still in release candidate (rc) and will have bugs and need to be constantly updated (almost daily being worked on fixing things)
so switching to 2.1rc4 means you'll have to keep up on top of things updating constantly
there's also limited themes and mods since it's still in rc
and once it does go stable version you'll be able to update but it will only be the large upgrade which means any customization you do now will be lost in updating to the stable version

landyvlad

Quote from: shadav on November 30, 2021, 06:28:15 PMonce it does go stable version you'll be able to update but it will only be the large upgrade which means any customization you do now will be lost in updating to the stable version

Will those 'customisations' include all the settings e.g. permissions etc? I hope not.

What I knew going in is that when creating a NEW forum I had to decide to either:
Go with 2.0.18 as stable and well tested and plenty of available mods and themes. In which case I'd be committing to 2.0.x for a considerable period

OR, the route I chose:
New install 2.1RC4 and build from that. Become familiar with its foibles and opportunities, develop the set up and look I want it to have.

Sure it'll be a bit of a hassle to do the upgrade to stable but for my particular circumstances I felt that was the best option.

I'm minimising the number of modifications I install as more mods = more complexity = more of a pain in the butt come upgrade time.

any modifications

customizations as in code changes you made or mods that were installed to the core code.

landyvlad

Ah so all the settings etc for the core program will be saved in database and thus not lost - is that correct?

Lazybones

One thing to note is we jumped on RC2 thinking it MUST be going official SOON, with a few months.. and here we are YEARs later RC2 was released in March 30, 2019.

I am thinking SMF is heavily abusing the term RC.

Kindred

well....  so what?

1- we do warn folks that RC versions still have known bugs
2- we do indicate that RC versions are not final -- and we do not promise any count or timeframe (ever)

I work for a software company in my RL job.   We recently had 6 potential RCs...     each one, during testing, required additional work before we would approve release.

Seriously, RC means Release CANDIDATE. If the candidate is not ready, it gets fixed and another candidate is put forward.
2.0 had more than 5 RCs.

Yes, it is taking a bit long, I agree. That being said, you should note that Smf is being developed by volunteers who are ddeveloping on their own time and dime. Smf 2.1 even if it is in a rc stage, is a very stable and solid product. And we all should be happy that Smf takes the release of the new versions very seriously. You do not want them to rush and release an unstable product full of bugs and/or security issues now, do you?

https://acis.i-live.eu/  merged from 2.0.18 to 2.1 RC4 with no problem for few months while running php 7.2
moving to php 7.4 or 8.0 got some some troubles, but fixed fast. hope that's all. (Read more here)
